Start with the arithmetic
A casino game returns less than it takes. A slot generally pays out around 96% of everything staked over a very large number of spins, which means roughly 4% of everything staked is the casino's margin. Play for long enough and the outcome converges on that.
This is why the wagering requirements we write about matter so much. A 40x requirement on a 100 bonus means a total of 4,000 staked, and at a 96% return the expected cost of running 4,000 through a slot is about 160. The bonus is 100. The arithmetic is not hidden and it is definitely not working in your favour.
The only reliable way to treat it: as money spent on entertainment, gone the moment you deposit it. Anything that comes back is a surprise. A budget set that way cannot be blown, because the loss was the plan.
The limit tools inside a casino account
Most casinos publish these under the account settings, and they are considerably more effective than willpower because they are decisions made in advance.
| Tool | What it does | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit limit | Caps what you can pay in per day, week or month | Lowering one is usually immediate; raising one is often held for 24 hours or more |
| Loss limit | Caps what you can lose in a period | Less widely offered than deposit limits |
| Session limit | Ends a session after a set time | Useful against the thing people underestimate most, which is time |
| Reality check | Interrupts play with how long you have been on | Sounds trivial and is often the tool that works |
| Cool-off | Locks the account for a short fixed period | Ranges from 24 hours to several weeks |
| Self-exclusion | Closes access for months or years | Normally cannot be reversed early, which is the point of it |
Availability differs by operator. Our reviews record which tools each casino publishes, and several offer none at all.
Set these on day one, before there is a balance and certainly before anything has gone wrong. A limit set calmly is a different decision from one set after a bad session.
Warning signs worth taking seriously
In isolation, these do not mean much. Several of them together is worth your attention.
- Chasing. Depositing again to win back what just went, which is the single most reliable predictor of a bad outcome.
- Gambling with money that is already committed to rent, bills or debt.
- Hiding it. Being vague with people close to you about how much or how often.
- Borrowing to play, from people, cards or credit.
- Playing longer than intended, repeatedly, and being surprised by the time.
- Relief rather than enjoyment. When it stops being fun and becomes something you need to do.
- Thinking a win is due. It is not. Each spin is independent of every spin before it, and no result makes another more likely.
Free, confidential help
All of these are completely free, do not require an account, and are independent of any casino.
| Organisation | What it offers |
|---|---|
| BeGambleAware | Advice, a self-assessment and a free national helpline |
| Gambling Therapy | Online support in multiple languages, available worldwide |
| GamCare | Free counselling, live chat and a 24-hour helpline |
| Gamblers Anonymous | Peer support meetings, in person and online |
| Gamban | Software that blocks gambling sites across your devices |
| Gordon Moody | Residential and intensive treatment for severe gambling harm |
Blocking software and bank controls
Two simple measures that work independently of any casino.
Blocking software such as Gamban covers every device you install it on and does not rely on each operator honouring a request. Bank gambling blocks are offered by a lot of banks and card issuers, usually toggled in the banking app, and each of these blocks normally comes with a cooling-off period before it can be lifted. Together they are harder to work around than any single casino's self-exclusion.
Under 18
Gambling should be done responsibly, and it is for adults. Every casino listed here requires you to be at least 18, and many require more depending on where you live. Operators verify age at withdrawal, so an underage account does not get paid.
Children should not be able to reach gambling sites or apps. If they use your devices, parental control software can block gambling content, and any account you hold should be password-protected rather than left signed in.
What this site does about it
Since we are a comparison site, what we can do is limited and worth stating plainly.
- Every page carries an 18+ notice and links to free help.
- Our reviews record which limit tools each operator publishes, and say so when there are none.
- Our guides are written to show what an offer really costs rather than to make it look attractive. Several of them conclude that a bonus is worth declining.
What we cannot do is contact an operator on your behalf. If you think gambling has become a problem, the organisations above are a good place to start, and they are far better at this than any comparison site.
18+ Gambling is for adults only. Online casino play is not legal everywhere, so check the rules where you live before registering anywhere. Free, confidential help is available from BeGambleAware, Gambling Therapy and Gamblers Anonymous.
