How casino free spins work
A free spins package gives you a certain number of spins on a particular slot, each locked to a stake amount the casino determines. You play them, and whatever they win is usually credited to you as bonus funds with a wagering requirement attached.
Behind a single number on a banner sit three separate variables: how many spins, what each one stakes, and what happens to the money the spins win. A package is only comparable once you have all three, and unfortunately most promotions publish only the first.
The whole calculation: spins multiplied by the value of each spin gives you the stake value of the package. That figure, rather than the count, is the size of the gift. Everything after it is governed by the same clauses as a cash bonus.
What free spins are actually worth
Seven of the packages we reviewed publish both a count and a per-spin value. Plotting them on one axis shows how little the count tells you.
| Package | Spins | Value each | Stake value |
|---|---|---|---|
| CoinCasino, $1,000 deposit | 50 | $4.00 | $200 |
| BetFury welcome pack | 225 | $0.60 | $135 |
| Slotoro welcome pack | 250 | $0.20 | $50 |
| CoinCasino, $250 deposit | 50 | $1.00 | $50 |
| Fairspin welcome pack | 200 | $0.20 | $40 |
| CoinCasino, $100 deposit | 20 | $1.00 | $20 |
| CoinCasino, $10 deposit | 20 | $0.20 | $4 |
Values read from each operator's published bonus terms during its review. CoinCasino tiers the spin value by deposit size, which is why it appears four times.
Slotoro has 250 spins that stake $50. CoinCasino has 50 spins at its top tier that stake $200. The package with a fifth of the spins is worth four times as much, and no banner anywhere shows that.
One of CoinCasino's promotions also shows the tiering trap on its own. The same casino offers 20 spins that stake $4 on a $10 deposit and 50 that stake $200 on a $1,000 one. A promotion that says "up to 50 free spins" is describing the top tier, and the deposit you make is what decides which one you get.
Why the free spins count misleads
In this industry the spin count is the easiest number to inflate, because the casino determines the value of each spin.
The largest package in our database is 1,111 spins at Quickz. The terms price them at one spin for every 1 deposited, so reaching the headline means depositing 1,111. On the Quickz minimum deposit of 20, the same offer gives 20 spins, and our Quickz review works through what the advertised figure actually costs.
That is not unusual, it is the standard structure. Of the 88 casinos in our database, 70 publish a spin count, and the median is 200. Forty of them advertise 200 or more. Counting is cheap; it is the value of each spin that costs money.
What to ask instead of "how many spins": what does each spin stake, and what deposit unlocks the count on the banner. Two questions, and they turn a headline into a number you can compare.
Free spins with no deposit, and what usually gets called that
There are genuine no-deposit spins, and they are rare. What is common is a package where the qualifying deposit is simply left unstated, which reads like the same thing and is not.
Of the 88 casinos in our database, 33 publish no qualifying minimum for their welcome offer. That means the figure is determined at the cashier instead of in the terms, and it is the single most common gap in the entire dataset. A spin package with no published minimum is a package whose entry price you find out after registration.
The same distinction runs through the offers themselves. A no-deposit package is credited on registration and is typically small, while a first-deposit package is credited on a payment and is typically much larger. Both are described as free, and only one of them is.
| What is offered | What it means | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No-deposit spins | Credited on registration with no payment | The win cap, which is usually very low |
| No published minimum | A deposit is needed, and the amount is unstated | The cashier, before committing to anything |
| Wager-free spins | A deposit is needed; the winnings carry no play-through | Whether the cash match beside them is wager-free too |
No-deposit spins carry the harshest caps in the market, because the casino is giving something away for nothing. A cap of ten or twenty on the winnings from a no-deposit package is normal, which makes the count on it close to irrelevant. Our 10 minimum deposit casinos page collects the offers that publish a low, explicit entry price instead, so you are better off looking for a fair entry cost than for the word free.
The wagering on free spins winnings
Free spins rarely pay out in actual cash. Winnings arrive as bonus funds, and they carry the same requirement a cash bonus would.
Slotoro's 250 spins stake $50, and any winnings from them then carry a 40x requirement of their own. Bets.io goes one step further and writes the spins into the base the multiplier is calculated on, defining the requirement as 40 times "the deposit bonus plus winnings from free spins", which means a good spin session increases the amount you have to wager.
That last structure is worth noting, because it goes against how we generally think. Winning more on the spins makes the requirement larger. The wagering rises with the win, and our wagering requirements guide covers how the base changes the whole sum.
The game contribution table applies to this play as well. Winnings from spins are bonus funds, so the same percentages govern them, and departing from slots with them is subject to the same rates set out in our game contribution guide.
Free spins run on their own clock
The spin expiry is a separate clause from the bonus expiry, and the two rarely coincide.
| Casino | Free spins clock | Bonus clock |
|---|---|---|
| Banzai | 24 hours | 20 days |
| Quickz | 7 days | 48 hours |
| Fairspin | 3 days | 4 days |
| GG.Bet | 5 days from receipt | 5 days from receipt |
Read from each operator's published bonus terms during its review. Only one of the four runs the two clocks together.
Banzai and Quickz are the relevant pair. Banzai has a 20 day cash bonus and 24 hour spins, so the spins have to be used up first. Quickz reverses it, with 48 hours on the bonus and seven days on the spins, so the spins outlive the bonus they came with.
Then there is the drip. Some casinos release spins in daily batches: Slotoro releases 50 a day, Bets.io 20 a day across five days, and Fairspin 50 per deposit. In a seven-day window the last batch can land with two days still remaining, which is a shorter clock than the one advertised. The bonus terms guide charts every published window on this roster.
Free spins are tied to one named slot
The terms name the game, and there is no substituting it. That one clause determines most of what a package will do.
Fairspin uses all 200 of its spins on one title and runs them at $0.20 a spin. Slotoro spreads its 250 across four named slots, again at the same value. In both cases it is the volatility of those specific games, rather than the spin count, that decides how the spins play out.
The practical implication is surprising. On a high-volatility slot at a low stake, the most likely result across a complete package is a small total return or nothing at all, with a thin tail of large wins. On a low-volatility slot the same package returns something small far more consistently. There is no best choice; they are different products sold under the same words.
Wager-free spins and why they are rare
Wager-free spins add their winnings to your cash balance with no play-through. They are the only free spins whose value can be stated exactly before you play them.
Two casinos in our database publish them: Banzai, alongside a cash match that is also wager-free, and HyperLucky, which publishes 100 wager-free spins and no cash match at all. Both are listed on our 100 free spins casinos page, with the terms shown beside them.
One thing to be aware of, because the phrase is used loosely. Wager-free spins do not always mean a wager-free bonus. A casino can publish spins with no play-through alongside a cash match carrying 45x, and both live under the same welcome offer heading. Be sure you check which half the words apply to.
A wager-free spin can also still meet a ceiling. A withdrawal limit or a win cap sits on top of the spins whatever the wagering says, so a large win arrives in instalments rather than all at once, which our max cashout guide covers in full.
Caps on what free spins can pay
In addition to the wagering, several casinos cap what a spin package may return at all.
BetFury publishes the clearest example. The spins are worth $0.60 each across a 225-spin pack, and winnings from free spins are capped at $550. Whatever the spins produce above that figure is forfeited, however the wagering went.
Caps on spin winnings are usually expressed as a set amount rather than as a multiple, which makes them easier to read than the caps on cash bonuses and easier to miss, because they sit in a separate sentence from the spin count. Search the bonus terms for "free spins" and read every sentence that comes back, rather than just the one with the number in it.
Judging a free spins package in two minutes
- Find the value of each spin. Multiply it by the count. That is the whole gift, and it is usually smaller than it sounds.
- Find the deposit that unlocks the headline count. A tiered package advertises its top tier.
- Check the wagering on the winnings. Whether spin winnings are added to the base matters more than the multiplier itself.
- Check both clocks. The spins have their own, and a daily drip shortens the one that matters.
- Look for a cap on spin winnings. It is a separate sentence from the cap on the bonus.
- Note the named slot. Its volatility decides the shape of the outcome more than anything on the banner.
Our 200 free spins casinos page ranks the larger packages by what they cost to clear, if you want packages already sorted on these terms rather than on the count.
Free spins questions
The casino credits a specific number of spins on a named slot at a fixed stake value, and whatever they win is usually credited as bonus funds carrying a wagering requirement. The count is only half the figure.
The count multiplied by the value of each spin. We have recorded 250 spins worth $50 of stake and 50 spins worth $200. See the seven packages that publish both figures.
Typically. Winnings are credited as bonus funds carrying the same multiplier, and one casino here adds spin winnings into the base the multiplier is calculated on, so winning more raises the requirement.
On their own clock, from 24 hours to seven days across our reviews, and often unrelated to the bonus clock. Daily drips shorten it further. Check the comparison.
Not on the count alone. The 1,111-spin package in our database is priced at one spin per 1 deposited, so reaching the headline costs a deposit of 1,111.
Spins whose winnings are paid as cash with no wagering requirement. Two casinos in our database publish them. A win cap or a withdrawal limit can still be imposed on top of the payout.
Yes, subject to the wagering and any cap. One casino here states that free spin winnings are capped at $550 whatever the spins produce, and that clause sits in the bonus terms rather than in the promotion.
Almost always. The terms name the game and no substitution is allowed, meaning that title's volatility has more impact on the outcome than the spin count does.

Spin values are the hardest figure to collect for our database, because most casinos publish a count and stop. The seven packages on this page are the ones where both halves were published, and putting them in one table took fifteen full terms reads.
What surprised me was the ordering. I expected the big counts to be worth less per spin, and they are, but not by enough to explain the result. A 250-spin package staking $50 against a 50-spin package staking $200 is a four-fold difference in the opposite direction to the advertising, from casinos that are both being accurate.

A free spins package is a fixed amount of play, so its value is knowable before you claim it. Work it out for yourself first, and assume anything the spins win is money with conditions on it until the terms say otherwise.

Every spin value, clock and cap on this page was read from that operator's published bonus terms during its review, between June and August 2026, and each review carries the date. Casinos change these figures without notice, and the terms live when you claim are the ones that apply.
